Authentic Restaurants in Muscat: My secret Tips for local Streetfood in Oman
If you come to Muscat, you just have to try the exceptionally diverse, spicy and delicious kitchen of Oman. And where else would be the perfect place to try authentic restaurants if not the vibrant capital, Muscat.
The Omani kitchen is full of influences of the most diverse and different regions. It contains Arab, Persian, Indian and East African influences and combines their traditions and spices in a very special and exceptional way. What we consider exotic spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, saffron, and turmeric are continually reinterpreted in various dishes.

Why Muscat is a hidden Paradise for Foodies
There’s mainly two different types of restaurants in Muscat: the shiny hotel restaurants, that are beautiful but also kind of touristy and the hidden food spots of Oman, that are easy to miss.
To save you the trial and error, I’ve tested a few of Muscat’s hidden spots myself – and in this foodie guide, I’m sharing my experience and my absolute favorite local restaurants in the city. Each one is super affordable, authentic and delivers a real Omani flavor experience, you won’t find in tourist places. At the end, you’ll also find a few bonus insider tips, slightly fancier, yet still budget-friendly restaurants, that are totally worth it. And yes, they’re all safe and easy to visit even if you’re a woman traveling solo in Oman.

Not Your Typical Restaurant Guide: Discover Muscat’s Hidden Food Gems
This article isn’t your typical restaurant guide. I want to share some of Muscat’s best hidden local spots and my personal favorite authentic restaurants in the city. These are places where you can sit among locals, enjoy delicious food for a great price, and experience the real flavor of Oman.
Whether it’s breaktfast, lunch, or dinner, there’s a spot for every time of day. And with these authentic experiences, you can even save money while eating like a local. In this guide, I’m sharing insider tips for affordable restaurants in Muscat, that will help you avoid the tourist traps. These gems are guaranteed nowhere to be found in any guidebook!
Secret Tip #1: Tea House Muscat: Breakfast and Brunch like a Local
Turn right off Thaqafah St., just before the big cross roads where it turns into Al Kharjiyah St. – or type „HCXR+J25, Muscat, Oman“ into Google Maps // Instagram: @tea_house_om
My first insider tip for authentic breakfast or brunch in Muscat is the Tea House. You can sit amongst the locals while enjoying fresh chai and a traditional Omani breakfast. The atmosphere is simple: wooden furniture with cushions inside gives a real taste of the Orient, and outside, plastic chairs add to the relaxed, unpretentious vibe. When the sun warms your face and you know the food is delicious and affordable, the setting feels just perfect.
From fresh bread to scrambled eggs, the menu offers a full range of options. My personal tip: The Omani bread – a very thin, baked dough served with egg, soft cheese, and honey. Sounds intriguing? It really is and does live up to the hype.
But honestly? Everything I tried here was incredibly tasty! And the best part? Everything costs less than one Rial. That unbeatable value makes the Tea House one of my top recommendations. A trip to Muscat isn’t complete without visiting this loal gem!

One last small tip: it’s also a great spot in the evening and literally always busy from my experience. Right next door is another restaurant and you can order from both places while sitting outside if you like.
Secret Tip #2: Camel Cookies Qurum – Coffee, Ocean Views & Sweet Treats
Google Maps: JF86+8RW, Muscat, Oman // https://www.camelcookies.com
My second insider tip is Camel Cookies, located right on Qurum Beach and in my opinion, one of the most beautiful cafés in Muscat. It’s the perfect spot after a stroll along the stunning beach. The coffee here is incredible, and the latte I ordered was absolutely addictive. This café is popular with young locals and, in my opinion, offers the most unique snacks in the city.
The selection of the cookies is nearly endless, making it tough to choose. My tip: try the “Create Your Own – Tasting Plate” with six cookies of your choice. It’s an easy way to sample several flavors, and it’s perfect for sharing. My personal favorites are the saffron cookies, Nutella with Arabic Cofee, and the pistacio cream cookies. You should definitely not miss this!
In short: If you’re looking for the best cookies in Oman, paired with excellent coffee in Muscat, Camel Cookies is the place. With it’s beautiful location near Qurum Beach and close to the Opera House, it’s the ideal stop for an afternoon snack or to recharge during a busy sightseeing day!

Secret Tip #3: Al Tarboosh – Falafel Paradise in Muscat
Almaarefah Rd., Muscat 133, Oman // Instagram: @altarboosh.om
If you want to eat really well and still affordably in Muscat, you absolutely can’t miss this insider tip: Al Tarboosh in Ghubra. From the outside, the small restaurant looks rather unassuming despite its large sign – you caould almost drive past it, since it’s on a busy street. But trust me, that would be a mistake! Inside you’ll find honest, authentic local cuisine in Muscat, that pulls you in and makes you want to come back again and again.
Honestly, I’ve never seen any tourists here, mostly just locals picking up food or sitting down for a quick dinner. And that basically says it all. The atmosphere is simple: tables and chairs on a “fake grass” floor, that’s all – and kinda cool even. But in the evening, as you sit there with the aroma of fresh herbs and warm falafel filling the air, surrounded by locals chatting, that’s the authentic feeling you want, when traveling!

Eating like the Locals: simple, honest, and incredibly delicious
And the food? Truly, it couldn’t be better. The falafel are perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful on the inside – in my opinion, the best falafel in Muscat. Alongside you’ll find creamy hummus, crispy halloumi, fresh salad, and a wonderfully aromatic lentil soup that tastes amazing, thanks to Oman’s famous variety of spices. Everything is fresh, everything smells incredible and the prices are so good that you might be tempted to order a second plate and try your way through the menu.

In my opinion, Al Tarboosh is the perfect example of authentic cuisine: honest, unpretentious, and incredibly tasty. No touristy gimmicks, just real street food in Muscat, only served on a plate instead of a paper bag. It’s a place where you instantly feel welcome and realize: here, you truly eat like the locals in Muscat.
My verdict: Eating Like a Local – My Favorite Food Spots in Muscat
If you want to truly experience Muscat, don’t just focus on the sights. The real Oman is best discovered through its flavors. For me, places like the Tea House, Camel Cookies, an Al Tarboosh tell stories you won’t find on a postcard or in any guidebook. They showcase how diverse, flavorful, and welcoming the local Omani cuisine truly is. And the best part? Affordable restaurants in Muscat are everywhere and incredibly varied.
Whether it’s breakfast or brunch with the locals, a sweet treat by the beach, or a falafel under the open sky – in Muscat you’ll find a little piece of authentic life around every corner. And that’s exactly what makes this city so special. So: let yourself wander, try a bit of everything, and savor every meal – because sometimes it’s these humble, unassuming spots that stay with you forever.
And if this has made you want to take a piece of Oman home into your own kitchen, I have made a souvenir guide, where you can find all the information on Omani spices and many more cool things to take home.
